Ensuring that your kids eat a balanced diet can sometimes feel like a daunting task, especially when you’re trying to incorporate new and nutritious ingredients into their meals. However, it doesn’t have to be a struggle! By adding yummy ingredients to their diet, you can make healthy eating a delicious and enjoyable experience for your little ones.In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the creative ways to enhance your kids’ balanced diet with flavourful and nutritious ingredients.
- Sneak in Fruits and Vegetables:
Fruits are no doubt one of the easiest ways to add vital nutrients to your kid’s diet by incorporating them into daily meals. The beautiful colors of fruits and vegetables are very easy to sneak into your kid’s favourite food and make it extra nutritious.
These nutrient-packed foods provide essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that are vital for their growth and development. Some of the examples to sneak the fruits and vegetables are; adding pureed spinach to pasta sauce or sneaking grated carrots into muffins, adding grated carrots, beetroots, and spinach puree to the idli batter and so much more.
There are endless possibilities for incorporating fruits and vegetables into your kids’ favorite dishes. By doing so, you’ll not only boost the nutritional value of their meals but also introduce them to a balanced diet with a wide range of delicious flavours and bright colors.
- Get Creative with Herbs and Spices:
My kids love spicy and tangy flavours in their food so it becomes easier to add a dash of herbs and spices here and there in their food. Herbs and spices are not only flavourful but also packed with health benefits. I love to use garlic, basil leaves, and mild curry spices to add flavour to kids’ meals. Some of the herbs and spices are rich in antioxidants and have other beneficial compounds that support kids’ overall health. Experiment with different combinations to create delicious and aromatic dishes that will tantalise kids’ taste buds.
- Including yummy proteins:
Proteins are one of the key components of a balanced diet for kids as they support growth and development. Proteins serve as the building blocks for muscles, bones, organs, and other tissues, while also aiding in immune function through antibody production.
To ensure both my kids get protein in their daily routine I start their day by giving them a glass of milk with their favourite flavour of Complan. Complan is power-packed with 34 vital nutrients including Iron, Iodine, vitamins 100% milk protein, etc
It has some yummy flavours that my kids love. While my daughter loves Royale Chocolate flavour, my son loves Kesar Badam flavour. Complan is available in Pista Badam flavour as well and we enjoy it. Complan has 63% more protein than other nutrition drinks and it’s a great and delicious way to add essential nutrients and protein .
Aside from this, you can also add lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, nuts, and seeds to ensure kids meet up the daily protein requirement necessary for growth and development.
- Include Healthy Fats:
While fats may be considered bad in general, adding healthy fats to the children’s diet acts as an essential component of a balanced diet. Since my kids love to eat avocados, nuts, and some seeds as well I usually try to add them to sandwiches, salads, fillings for parathas, smoothies, and much more.
Also preparing food with olive oil helps in adding richness and flavour while also promoting the overall well-being of the child. If you are looking for ways to add these healthy fats to your child’s diet then try adding slices of avocados as toppings, make a smoothie or shakes, knead it with the dough, and make parathas out of it, you can even add nuts and seeds to kids’ snacks, or drizzle olive oil over roasted vegetables/ any non-vegetarian dish if that’s something they eat.
- Adding healthy whole grains
Since I have been on the weight loss diet I have done more and enough research on how whole grains help in healthily losing weight. And that’s how I came to know of the benefits it can provide if added to a kid’s diet.

Whole grains are a great component of a balanced diet, offering a rich source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals too. Given the benefits of whole grains, I have started swapping refined grains with whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, oats, and whole wheat pasta and noodles too. To easily incorporate and let kids enjoy them too I use various means; like making dosa batter with brown rice, beetroot & oats cheela is our favourite, and quinoa salad with some citrusy dressing and fruits is much loved by my kids.
Incorporating yummy ingredients into your kids’ balanced diet doesn’t have to be a challenge. Making food fun is a great way to encourage kids to try out new things and also enjoy a balanced diet.
Using cookie cutters to shape sandwiches or fruits into fun shapes, arranging vegetables into smiley faces on their plates, or even serving meals in colourful bowls or plates can help. The overall creativity and presentation of food enhance kids’ desire to consume the food wholeheartedly and make the experience healthy while creating some fun and lasting memories with the family.
By prioritizing balance and variety in a kid’s diet, we can not only ensure that they’re getting the nutrients they need but also lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy eating habits. So go ahead, get cooking, and watch as your kids discover a world of delicious and nutritious flavors!
