Increased pollution and poor air quality have become a matter of serious concern for our country. And we all are resorting to various elements to help us breathe easy and safe too. Since I am a stronger believer of nature is the best remedy for most of the things that happens to us humans so I wanted to bank on something natural to ensure the air we breathe in our house is safe and relatively pure than the outside environment. Pure and fresh air is gradually becoming a luxury, with environmental pollution rapidly depleting the air quality both outdoors and indoors. And that’s why I thought of coming up with this post creating awareness around improving the air quality at home and also promoting growing more and more plants to make our mother earth green. I have been a plant parent since my childhood I guess and have loved them for various purposes they fulfill in our life. From being a lovely home décor, mood changer, a pleasure to the eyes and now has lots of health benefits too.
Here is a list of some amazing and beautiful air purifying plants that not just brighten up your house but also help in ensuring you breathe fresh and healthy.
- Golden pothos – Also known as devil’s ivy, this is one of my favorite plants and is not easily destructible. It can survive in a variety of conditions and can easily grow up to 8 feet long. It’s also considered one of the most effective indoor air purifiers for removing common toxins and harmful air particles
- English Ivy- This beautiful climber plant comes in different varieties and is well adapted to indoor conditions. Different varieties of English Ivy will prefer different light situations, from bright, indirect light to low-light spaces. It looks beautiful when grown in a hanging basket and makes for a perfect corner décor of your house.
- Peace Lily- Peace lilies are yet another beautiful plant with lovely white flowers on top. They are one of the top three plants for removing common household toxins, even ammonia. It is a robust plant and can even sustain with once-a-week watering.
- Areca Palm- Areca palm is a natural cooler and helps in removing various harmful toxins found in the atmosphere. This beautiful plant makes for a lovely addition to your living room while it’s busy filtering the air and adding moisture to the atmosphere.
- Spider Plant- The ones who are new to being a plant parent, these resilient spider plants are a perfect choice. They quietly battle the harmful chemicals present in the air thus making it safe for us to breathe. Spider plants grow quickly and look great in hanging baskets, especially in your workspace. Sometimes they even produce lovely white blossoms. You can also repot the tiny ‘spiderettes’ and grow a whole family of plants that will pretty much take care of themselves.
- Snake Plant- Also known as Mother-in-law’s tongue, this is one of the toughest plants and you can easily bring them home and forget the care. They can easily survive with less to no water for good 15 days to a month also. These yellow striped succulents are known to release oxygen at night and thus make for a perfect plant for your bedroom and a good nights sleep. PS- Don’t overwater as the roots tend to rot in too much moistness.
- Rubber plant- Rubber plants are evergreen trees in India. Their roots grow upwards and often become entwined around the plant’s trunk, forming interesting shapes. These plants love bright, filtered light and a little attention now and then.
Aside from the above 7, there are many other plants that help in cleaning the air in the house like Aloe Vera, Dracaena, Chinese evergreen, bamboo palm, and many more.
Hope you found this post useful as I thrive to create awareness around why we should be planting more plants at home and even outdoors wherever possible to create greener surroundings and earth. While plants have less horsepower than air purifiers, they’re more natural, cost-effective, and therapeutic as well for the health. In fact, having plants around also helps in alleviating a good mood and increasing productivity.
