“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn” – Benjamin Franklin.
Three best friends Anita, Anushka and Amrita support each other in everything at school. Anita believes in understanding the concept of a particular subject and then learning about it. She is also able to retain the information and apply it practically to solve problems. Anushka is more into reading on the surface which doesn’t lead to any good learning at all and retention of the knowledge is almost nil. While Amrita believes in mugging up everything without understanding the concept behind. In this scenario, Amrita possesses relevant knowledge but is unable to use that knowledge to solve problems. Amrita has attended to relevant information but has not understood it and, therefore, cannot use it. The resulting learning outcome is called rote learning. This is the situation of most people in our country. Many Indians have attained success despite this system of rote learning. However, simply being able to recall information is not enough in today’s world when that information is instantly available to anyone on the web. In order to succeed in the true sense and grow in life one needs to be able to apply their knowledge and information to solve a real-world problem. In order to understand how this problem of rote learning can be addressed let us understand what rote learning is in true sense.
What is rote learning?
Rote learning is nothing but memorisation of information based on repetition. It usually helps in retaining the information but it doesn’t clear the concept behind that particular subject and thus when applied in real life, it becomes difficult to manage problems. Deeply rooted in our education system, it destroys the thinking and analytical capabilities of students in the long run.
Not only does rote learning kill the joy of education and learning, but it also has a far bigger ill-effect.The antidote for Rote Learning!
In order to tackle the increasing problem of Rote learning, in our education system a very well-known brand, Dell India has started Dell Aarambh – PC for Education Initiative. This initiative is all about using PC to facilitate better education for students via a multi-pronged approach of offline training, on-ground competitions, and digital resources. This innovative program focuses on equipping teachers and parents with key PC usage skills by giving training in schools and making them realize that having a PC is not a luxury but a necessity. With this initiative, Dell India aims to defeat rote learning and make education fun with Dell Anti Rote Day.
The benefit of computer use
Computers have changed the way we function in Day-to-day life. PC use in school can help children widen their thought process and learn while understanding the larger concepts. Thanks to the world of computers, imparting education has become easier and much more interesting than before. And last but not least, the process of learning has gone beyond learning from prescribed textbooks due to the use of PC.
Memorizing content, didactic instruction and other drill do have a place in the education system. But I strongly believe they must not take up the entire teaching time. On this Anti-Rote day by Dell, I would like to also emphasize that curriculum at school must focus on fewer topics but the in-depth subject matter. Using PC education in school alongside textbooks can provide a purposeful learning experience. Every child deserves such a non-rote education. And, Dell Aarambh is the antidote to rote learning. And last but not least, the only way to help children grow and prepare them for the future is to give them the correct sort of education — “schools where children would learn to think, rather than to memorize facts.”
I would like to conclude this post with a meaningful quote by Albert Einstein “Education is not the learning of facts but the training of minds to think”

So true…i guess we as parents have to collectively push schools and education system towards creative and conceptual thinking and remove rote learning
Digital learning is a great boon for children of this generation.
I, applaud this initiative by Dell as we are products of rote learning and we know how stressful it is and how it really isn’t very helpful. In the long run only conceptual learning works!
Magnificent goods from you, man. I’ve understand your stuff previous to and you’re just extremely wonderful. I really like what you’ve acquired here, certainly like what you’re saying and the way in which you say it. You make it enjoyable and you still care for to keep it wise. I can’t wait to read much more from you. This is actually a great web site.
Our education system needs to evolve more towards conceptual learning and away from exam oriented rote learning. Conceptual learning is what stays with the child in the long term.
I really like this idea of conceptual learning. Great initiative by Dell! Dell has always been my favorite by the way. 🙂
This is a great initiative and will help many parents and kids. We only focus on the aspect of rote learning since ages. This is the great initiative by Dell.
Hey dear so perfectly made me understand this will Dell.
I am mom of 5 yr old boy so many times find difficult to decide what is good and what is bad when it comes to study.
Your words gave me positive lights to follow right way to teach to child.
I recently heard about this initiative by Dell and really appreciate it. Conceptual learning is the best way to lay down great foundation for kids. Thanks for sharing
Dell came up with really an amazing initiative. Rote learning is not all good for kids. It really important to make them understand and then they will remember it forever rather than rote learning which is just memorizing the content
This initiative by Dell is a good move to decide for better future of kids. Kids need to have conceptual learning too and not only rote learning.
It is really important to learn and understand something rather that rote learning.
That’s great initiative by Dell to more focus on practical knowledge than rote learning
Lets admit that our generation was a Rote learner. We all mugged up lessons and penned down during exams and later would forget everything.Today our Kids have many good options thanks to technologies , they can learn and understand instead of just mugging up.
I absolutely agree with you that computers can change the way kids learn the concepts these days. They have access to all the information on the click of a button.
PC enabled learning is a way forward for educating our younger generation. I am happy to see Dell is changing the way conventional learning had been so far. Great write up Rakhi.
That’s a superb initiative by Dell, kudos to their efforts. Rote learning has been there in the education system & seems it has become an easy option for kids as well as teachers. But kids future depends on their knowledge of concepts & their analytical skills which can be gained only with the right approach towards learning.
This is such an important topic you brought to light. Everyone should give this a read.
This indeed is a superb initiative by Dell Rakhi to put an end to age old menace of rote learning
Rote learning doesn’t work in long way. Glad we have Personal computers at home to help our kids in studies. wonderful initiative by Dell to discourage rote learning.
PC – enabled learning is the need of the hour. Rote learning is purposeless. If kids understand the concept and it’s basics they will never forget it on life.
When we can learn at the click of mouse and understand concepts. Rote learning should be stopped.
Totally agree Rakhi, it’s high time we put an end to rote learning and this initiative by Dell is indeed a right step in the right direction to end the same
Yes learning the right way takes children further in life with correct firm steps else, they would get misguided half knowledge is more dangerous. This initiative by Dell will bring change.
Absolutely true rote learning is so entrenched in our educational system. Such a great initiative by Dell.
Glad to see Dell coming up with a new age learning vision!
This is a great initiative by Dell. A much needed and thoughtful move. Every child needs an effective solution to education.
This is a great intiative by Dell good I want kids not to do rote learning any more … PC learning is the best
