Females body anatomy contributes majorly to the UTI as they have a shorter urethra allowing the bladder to get better access to the urinary bladder. At times birth control pills also increase the risk of UTI. There are various other underlying health conditions that may cause UTI or slow down the body’s process of fighting the initial stages of infection.

Effective home remedies for UTI
- Cranberry- When the bacteria are successful in attaching themselves to the walls of the urinary tract it causes the UTI. And cranberry has certain ingredients that help prevent the bacteria from attaching to the walls. Consuming cranberry juice is one of the well-known natural remedies for UTI. In a day you can take up to 400-500 ml of juice in a day.
- Cranberry Extract- You can also buy cranberry extracts available in medical shops. All you need to do is add it with the required amount of water and gulp it down. You can have 2-3 sachets of these extracts in a day. Do not exceed unless your doctors say.
- Stay hydrated- Drinking water continuously can be one of the best remedies to get rid of UTI symptoms. In fact, keeping yourself hydrated can also help avoid UTI. Water helps in removing waste from the urinary tract organ retaining vital nutrients. You can drink as much water as possible and if you notice the onset of a burning sensation it’s better to increase the intake immediately.

- Consume garlic- Garlic has antibacterial and antifungal properties so having it in your diet can help boost immunity. Allicin compound found in Garlic is also known to kill E. coli bacteria that cause UTI.
- Use heating pad- UTI can cause inflammation and irritation around the pubic area. Applying a heating pad can help you soothe the area and reduce discomfort. Use it for a max of 15 mins at a stretch not more than that. Don’t apply directly to the skin.
- Avoid sugar– Most of the bacteria feast on sugar and the more you add it to your diet the more bacteria spreads. So completely cut down on your sugar as soon as you notice the UTI symptoms.
- Empty your bladder– Urinate as and when you get the urge to pee. Even If it’s a small amount of urine just remove it. As every time you pee bacteria comes out of the body via urine.
- Wipe it front to back– Many times UTI develops when the bacteria from the rectum gets access to the urethra. After urinating or even washing when you wipe, do it in such a way that it’s done from the front (genitals) and then you go back towards the rectum. Don’t do back to front as those increases the chances of bacteria entering the urethra. Use separate pieces of tissues for front and back, this would be much better.
- Practice good sexual hygiene– Intercourse also causes bacteria to enter the body from the urinary tract. Practice good sexual hygiene to reduce your chances of getting UTI. Here are few things one can do to avoid UTI.
- Urinate before and after intercourse
- Use barrier/contraception
- Washing the genitals before and after intercourse with warm water
- Wear loose clothes- Try and wear very loose and comfortable clothing. When choosing underpants go for loose and breathable underpants. Avoid wearing nylon completely.
- Apple cider vinegar- Add around 2tbsp of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink it empty stomach to get rid of bladder infection. It is antibacterial and alkalizes the inner environment of the body.
