When I started gardening, I was sure to have my own kitchen garden. In fact, the idea of having a small kitchen garden under the bright sunlight on our balcony was quite appealing. And secondly having fresh herbs growing in your garden is a blessing for the ones who love cooking. You can grow most of these herbs indoors as well. So, let’s deep dive and see what are these essential herbs to grow in your kitchen garden easily.
Here are the top 10 herbs to grow in your kitchen garden
- Thyme- This is a beautiful smelling herb and is usually used in French cooking. It has a lovely earthy flavor and goes well with quite a lot of dishes.
- Tulsi- Tulsi is one of the most sacred plants in India and can be found in almost all the houses for the place it holds in the Hindu religion. It’s worshiped in all the houses and is also used as an important kitchen ingredient due to the medicinal properties it holds in Ayurveda. From curing sore throat, stomach ailments, to boosting immunity, it has great benefits. I prefer to use this with Kandha, morning tea, and also for my detox water. It has immense benefits. So, you must have this one in your house. Not exactly as a herb but as one sacred and powerful plant.
- Basil- This is yet another lovely herb that grows annually and can be grown from seeds or cuttings as well. Widely used in Italian dishes it has found its place in Indian cooking as well. I personally love to add this to my daily dose of healthy salads. It comes in many forms and colors and always remembers to cut off the flowers before using it to avoid the tart flavor. You can easily grow this on your kitchen window with bright sunlight.
- Rosemary- Yet another herb that is mainly used in Italian cooking. I usually don’t make Italian food at home as not much versed with it. But a friend of mine makes lip-smacking Italian dishes along with this lovely herb. It has a needle-like appearance and has a strong pungent aroma.
- Oregano- Though I do not know much of Italian stuff but with kids at home and their demands, I have learned to make pasta, few sauces, and making salads using Oregano. It’s super easy to grow herb and comes back every year.
- Cilantro- This is one of my favorite herbs and I use it almost daily in something or the other. This bright green and beautiful-looking herb in India is mostly used to garnish food, to make chutneys, summer coolants, and much more. In fact, when used for gravies it tastes even better.
- Mint- Mint is a beautiful flavored herb that can enhance the taste of certain kinds of food. I mainly use mint for making summer coolants, chutneys, add it to mango pulp while storing for the year (It makes a wonderful mango mint drink), cocktails and mocktails, to season yogurt as well aside from many other ways I use it cooking.
- Dill- Fresh dill is a much sought-after herb. Its usually used to flavor foods and drinks. You might have used dried dill but nothing compares to the fresh dill and the flavor it adds to anything and everything you use this with.
- Lemongrass- Oh I love this one. It’s one of my favoritest if there is any such word 😊. Well, I love Lemongrass for its beautiful flavor and how it lifts up the taste of my morning tea. If grown outside it grows up to 6 feet tall and if grown indoors it will remain considerably small. It can also be used for seasoning and also Lemongrass stalks can provide antioxidants such as beta-carotene and defense against cancer and eye inflammation.
- Parsley- This is a beautiful green herb that is a must-have in your kitchen garden. Parsley is available in many varieties with different textures and shapes. Its mainly used for garnishing the food. Usually, flat-leaf parsley is used for cooking and curly ones are used for garnishing. It has great power to make the dull-looking dishes shine out with its bright green color. So, you see why it’s a must-have in your kitchen garden.
