During my pregnancy, I had gestational diabetes and as a result, my baby had an increased birth weight. Doctors told me that since I was suffering from gestational diabetes there were chances my baby might have medical issues or she might even suffer from diabetes herself. That was the time when I started regretting not having a doctor for my baby in advance who could keep a track of her health immediately after birth. There are numerous reasons why now I feel that a pediatric doctor plays a huge role during the pregnancy and equally important role post-pregnancy as well. Here are few reasons why a pediatrician is important during and post pregnancy too:
Importance of Pediatrician during pregnancy
During my recent visit to a pediatrician for my daughter, I happened to ask the doctor regarding the right time to choose the specialist for the baby. As per his opinion, it’s better to choose between 28- 34 weeks of the pregnancy. Few reasons for choosing a pediatrician at this time are-
Few key reasons:
1) Choosing a pediatrician in advance will ensure that the doctor is aware of possible complications or healthcare issues in your pregnancy and in the baby. This helps him/her in dealing with the little one well after birth and giving the right treatment.
2) It is important that the specialist is near your house and has easy connectivity to his clinic. Emergencies come without any warning and hence it’s better to have a doctor closer to you.
3) As a parent, it’s imperative that the doctor matches up with your belief in baby care and can treat accordingly. This is only possible when the doctor is selected in advance after enough number of sessions.
4) Having finalized a doctor before the birth can help you be prepared for your newborn’s care and also know the do’s and don’ts well in advance.
Parents often consult friends and family when starting the search for a pediatrician, but the final selection involves more than just a helpful suggestion. It is imperative that parents take several factors into consideration while choosing a pediatrician.

There is nothing more exciting and potentially overwhelming than your newborn’s first doctor visit. Choosing a good pediatrician is such an important thing, and to make sure a pediatrician is in place before that last month of pregnancy. We ended up changing pediatricians when my daughter was 6, because my daughter had ended up very sick and I didn’t like how the Dr handled the situation. So it’s also important that you are happy with the Dr. It can be tough to choose a pediatrician.
You’re right it is SO important to have a pediatrician BEFORE as well as after pregnancy! I never thought of that when I was pregnant with my llittle one!
Very interesting post! I never really thought about which pediatrician I would use, I kind of just automatically went to the one I saw when I was a kid. He just retired so now we go to his son in the same clinic! I can definitely see the importance of finding a pediatrician early if there are complications in the pregnancy though.
In the UK we have midwifes that deal with you during pregnancy and deal with all the bits that go with it. There isnt much choice. Great post

That’s a lovely post. I live in the UK and things are processes are different here. You have a medical record that is fed into the system and wherever you go, your details are fetched from the system that’s available in every hospital and to every GP registered in the UK. Everything is managed by central NHS all over the country. However my friends and family are in New Delhi so I am going to recommend Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Centre to them. Most of my cousins have kids so I’m sure the info will be useful to them.

Yes, about pediatrician a wonderful info. I was not even known of this at my pregnancy time.
I did a bit of research for our pediatrician before my first was born. I called the office to ask some questions I had about him. They instead scheduled a time for my husband and I to come in and meet with the Dr. and ask him our questions in person. It was a great way to begin that relationship. Always ask, you never know what will happen.

This is very important. We interviewed a lot of pediatricians which may have seemed excessive at the time but it was for a reason. I’ve heard of so many people regretting not choosing before hand, so I’m glad we decided to go that route! A lot of practices have been bought out by bigger companies and seem to lose that personal feel. Thankfully we have an old school peds office that still believes in client and customer care over profits.
We have been blessed to find a pediatrician who agrees and promotes our wishes.
