Having a pet at home is a huge responsibility. From ensuring good food, hygiene, good health it’s also important that pet owners ensure they are safe in their surroundings as well. There are various houseplants and even outdoor plants that can cause potential risks and hazards to your pet. If your dog or a cat likes to nibble on things and explore in the house then it’s important to avoid toxic plants. Rather than avoiding keeping plants at home you could avoid the dangerous varieties and bring in pet-friendly house plants that are safe for cats and dogs.
Here is my post I am listing down the top 11 pet-friendly house plants that are safe for cats and dogs.
- Rattlesnake Plant– These are not the easiest variety of house plants but with little care, you can get lovely foliage and vibrance. The rattlesnake plant grows up to 30 inches tall, and the large leaves have a variegated pattern. You can keep these in indirect sunlight and they will be happy to flourish. And they are absolutely safe for pets too.
- Spider Plant– Spider plants are the easiest to grow and are absolutely pet-friendly. The babies from the mother spider plants can be used to propagate more plants. Spider plant grows best in bright, indirect light, but it can tolerate low light, too. With very little care and moderate watering your plant can grow from 12 tall to 24 inches wide and be able to produce lots of baby plants.
- Parlor Palm- This is a beautiful palm plant from the palm family and looks super cool indoors as well. They are quite safe for pets and don’t harm even if by mistake pets nibble on them. These palms love indirect light but not completely low light. Water them when the soil is dry to touch. They do not like overwatering and soggy soil.
- Ponytail Palm- The ponytail palm tree has become a popular houseplant over the years. Its sleek bulb-like trunk and lush, long curly leaves make it visually stunning, and the fact that a ponytail palm is forgiving and easy in its care makes this an ideal houseplant for many people. The ponytail palm tree needs bright light, but it will be okay if you give it bright light about half the time.
- Succulents– Most of the succulents are safe for pets but with so many varieties available these days it’s better to research individual plants before you buy one for your indoors. You could go for the most popular succulents, including hens and chicks and echeverias. Jade, for example, while similar to other succulents, is actually dangerous to pets. Most succulents stay just a few inches tall when grown indoors. They will do best in bright light, and only need watering every couple of weeks.
- Bird’s Nest Fern– This one’s on my list for a long time so I am gonna get this for my home too. These are squiggly green fern thrives on the low light and varying humidity conditions that characterize bathrooms. You could put these in your bathrooms too to make the atmosphere all the more appealing. Stay tuned for my detailed post on plants that are best for your washroom. They are safe for your pets so go ahead and get them.
- Boston Fern– The beautiful Boston fern is also on the lower end of the maintenance spectrum since it requires food only every two months. Your kitty can bat at the ferns all he wants and your puppy can even take a bite—this plant is safe for cats and dogs.
- Polka Dot Plant- This is a beautiful plant with a splash of colors. You can add these to miniature gardens, terrariums, or even in mixed containers. You can find this pet-friendly plant in colors like pink or white, and though it can grow up to three feet tall, it usually stays on the small side (under 12 inches) in containers. Place it in a spot that gets bright, indirect light and keeps the soil consistently moist.
- Watermelon Peperomia- The Peperomia family has many varieties but I personally love the watermelon one. They love direct sunlight and need moderate watering. Absolutely safe for your pets so you can keep these in your balcony gardens easily.
- Orchid- Orchid is one of the most elegant plants and it can add elegance to its surroundings as well. Luckily, you can add one to your home without posing a threat to your pet. With proper care, orchids can last up to four months. They do best in partial light. Water once a week during the winter, and twice a week in hotter months.
- Herbs- Basil, rosemary, and thyme are great kitchen herbs that are totally safe for your pet to snack on. They love direct light, so leave them hanging out by a window all day long.
