Rain is like a gentle symphony that dances upon the earth from the beautiful sky. It has a magical quality that transports us back to the innocent days of childhood. Each raindrop tells a story, and as we reminisce about those precious moments from the past, we are reminded of the simple joys and boundless imagination that defined our childhood. Join me on a nostalgic journey as we explore the enchanting connection between rain and childhood memories.
While some of us may not like the pitter-patter of rain everywhere but I find rain enchanting. The earthy and woody fragrance that rises when the rain kisses the ground brings in some different kind of happiness in my heart. To date when it rains, I rush to the balcony to smell the earthy scent coming out of the pots and ground below our balcony. It’s so divine and so joyful. As children, my friends and I would eagerly rush outdoors, noses upturned, inhaling the intoxicating perfume of rain. It was as if the very essence of nature was telling us stories of distant lands, awakening our senses and igniting our imagination.
Today when I see my son running over the puddle of muddy water and purposely jumping on it to trouble me, I go back to those days when I would do the same. It was the sheer joy of splashing through the puddles, the rainy boots that I vaguely remember buying would send ripples of water cascading around all of us and we would laugh till it hurt our sides. The start of the rainy season not just gave us the opportunity to have fun out there in the rain but also helped us connect more with the family and siblings at home. As a tradition in our house, my mum would make pakoras and chutney for us to devour while the rain continued to do its pitter-patter. We would also play games like hide and seek, play cards, watch our favorite old movies with our parents, and spend such a beautiful time back in the day.
Rains brought along with various opportunities to explore indoor adventures. We would be armed with blankets and cushions and would transform the house into fortresses of imagination. The rain would continue to give us the backdrop music that would help add fire to our imaginations. We would curl up with the blanket and enjoy storytelling sessions with friends as the rain became our co-conspirator, amplifying the magic of our tales.
I very clearly remember making paper boats with my mother. Every time it rained; she would make so many paper boats for me to play with in the puddles of water. She would encourage playing and enjoying in the rain and enjoying childhood to the fullest. Watching the boats navigate puddle currents was a source of endless fascination. Every time the boat would sail, we would weave some tale around the journey it was going to take and the places it would go. I dearly miss those days but I am reliving my childhood with my kids and making these cute little boats for them and enjoying with them.
Rains have always held a special place in my heart and to date when it rains, it brings out the child in me. I love to get soaked in the rain and love to dance to the tunes of raindrops. I am giving this very enthusiasm and childhood to my children and making them enjoy the joy of the rainy season and the happiness it fills in our hearts. Here’s a picture from our recent fun on the terrace when the heavens opened its gate and the gods poured rain to their heart’s content. With no cares in the world, we twirled and leaped, our laughter mingling with the melodies of the rain. Those moments of unbridled joy encapsulated the essence of childhood – carefree and uninhibited, embracing life’s pleasures without reservation. Rainbows are yet another natural progression to a beautiful rainy day. Despite thinking a lot, I couldn’t think of the day when I saw the rainbow for the first time in my life. But recently when my younger one saw the rainbow up and close, I can’t forget the beautiful expression on his face. He was playing with his sister on the balcony and saw a bright arcing across the sky. The kids got super excited and ran to us to come see it. I felt such joy to see the young face lit with happiness and joy and thought of how beautiful childhood and its little pleasures can be. We stood there for a long time, just watching the rainbow and admiring its beauty.
Today when it rains, I prefer to have a hot cup of coffee or tea sit on the balcony and enjoy the season while reading some of my favorite authors. And if not reading I love to gaze out in the sky from the rain-streaked windows of our living room, lost in the thought as the world outside is running and rushing to get saved from getting drenched.
The rain, like a dear friend, continues to whisper stories of our past, reminding us that the magic of childhood is never truly lost – it simply evolves into a treasure trove of memories that we carry with us, even as we step into the future. Rainy days can be a lot of fun, especially when you’re a kid. They’re a time to relax and be creative, and they’re a chance to bond with your family and friends. I’m so grateful for the rainy days of my childhood, and I’ll always cherish the memories I made during those times.
