Succulents are one plant family that has gained quite a lot of importance and recognition in recent times. They are basically plants with parts that are thick, fleshy, and enlarged, usually to retain water in arid climates or soil conditions. If you feel that you do not have a green thumb then these plants are just for you. They do not need much care and in fact, you can water them also once in two weeks and still be able to manage them. There are many different species and varieties of succulents available to choose from. In this post, I will be sharing some simple tips on how to grow and take care of Succulents.
Here are quick tips on how to grow and take care of Succulents
- Choosing a succulent– Choose succulents that are green in color as they can easily survive indoors in comparison to their bright-colored family members (red, purple). If you plan to grow your succulent in a hanging planter, you could go ahead with a trailing variety like a string of bananas. Always do internet research before buying a succulent or you could discuss it with the nursery people.
- Proper drainage- They do not like moist soil so pot them in soil that has good drainage. You can easily find special cactus and succulent mixes at the nursery, or even use an African violet mix. Choose a container with good holes for drainage
- Sunlight- Succulent’s love sunlight and can grow beautifully in bright sun. Place the potted succulent in a sunny spot if kept indoors. When you have newly potted a succulent then do not keep in direct sun. Gradually introduce the sunlight
- Propagation– Succulents are quite easy to propagate and can grow from their fallen leaf also.
- There are few varieties that can be toxic for pets if ingested so choose the plant carefully.
How to care for succulents
- Succulents love sunlight and depending on the variety you have got ensure they get 5-6 hours of direct sunlight
- Water the succulent when the soil is absolutely dry to touch. Overwatering can kill succulents.
- Fertilize them at least once a year. The plants benefit most from fertilizer in the spring, and again in late summer. There is no need to fertilize succulents in winter when they’re semi-dormant., They don’t need the nutrient boost because they are not actively growing.
- If the topmost leaves of your plant are dying, it could indicate overwatering, pests, or disease.
The great thing about growing succulents indoors is they’ll generally look good for several weeks even if you do not water or care for them. Just keep them in the bright corner and they will be happy. Hope you feel better prepared to take care of your succulents indoors now with these tips and tricks! Make sure you don’t let things get too stressful. After all, succulent gardening is supposed to be fun and therapeutic.
