A terrarium is just like an aquarium, but instead of fishes, you keep plants in it. It can easily be made at home using any glass container available at home. If the container is wide at the base, it would be ideal. It is basically made and planted to look like a miniature garden or a small forest enclosed in its own little world.
Terrariums have recently started gaining importance and place in most urban households. Aquatic plants aesthetically arranged in a rather distinct and creative manner make them the most eye-catching and appealing too. So, let’s deep dive and find out how you can make a Terrarium garden at home.
Items needed for making a Terrarium
- A glass container with or without top
- Colorful or white beach stones
- Activated Charcoal
- Terrarium appropriate plants
- Potting mix
- Sheet Moss
- Decorative elements
Plants that are suitable for Terrarium

Stepwise guide to make a Terrarium
- Take a clean container and start with the first layer of rocks. It can be about one inch in height. This helps in easy drainage of soil so that the roots of the plants are not clogged with water
- Over this rock, layer add ½ inch layer of charcoal
- Fill the container with half-full potting soil
- Plant your plants on this soil. Pot the plants along with their roots.
- You could arrange the plants in a creative manner to make them look beautiful
- Leave some space for them to breathe and grow. Pat down the soil so they don’t get uprooted easily.
- Last but not least add some decorative pebbles, rocks, pine cones, or small birds to make your Terrarium garden look pretty.
How do you care for Terrariums?
- If the leaves of plants in the Terrarium are turning yellow or are growing too big then you could trim the leaves.
- If you have an open terrarium, monitor for pests such as gnats or mealy bugs.
- In case you have a closed Terrarium then open the lid every now and then to let the fresh air in.
- Most Terrariums will need either direct or indirect sunlight but artificial light would also do
Containers that are good for Terrariums
- Glass jars
- Fish tanks with light bulbs
- Goldfish bowls
- Coffee mugs
