Having plants is not enough we need to know various techniques and tips to keep them healthy and happy. From regular watering, adding fertilizer, pruning, and so much more are needed to keep the plant healthy. Choosing the right plant for you and keeping it alive is even more complicated. If your beloved indoor plant looks like it’s on its last legs, don’t give up. In fact, plants are just like babies who might suffer from various good and bad days. Their health may suffer with over or underwatering, from too much light to too little light. We need to maintain the right balance of everything and some tips to revive a DYING plant.
Most of the times plant that looks dried and leaves papery may not necessarily be dead. You need to check the stems and roots for any sign of life in them. If the roots are firm, pliable, and greenish on the inside then definitely you can revive your plant. To help you figure out what is wrong with your plant I have mentioned all the possible solutions.
Here are few magical Tips to revive a DYING plant
- Trim back dead parts- When you see the signs of a dying plant you need to start by trimming the dead leaves first. Then you need to do the same with dead stems till you see the green stems. New stems easily grow from the trimmed ones.
- Move your plant- There are plants that just need moderate to indirect sunlight. If in case your plant is getting too much sun then move it in shade. You can look for dry and brittle leaves or light and dark patches that will show that the plant is under stress. Similarly, if your plant is not getting enough light then move to a better light condition.
- Watering your plants- If the soil of your plant is very dry and the leaves are brittle, the plant is dehydrated and needs water. You do not have to flood the soil with water, only water enough so that the soil is damp. Next, you can keep the pot in a bowl full of water for 10 minutes. However, there are times when plants start to die due to overwatering. The roots will start to rot and mould could grow. It’s important to know which plant needs how much water and usually in the winter months plants do not need much water compared to summers.
- Feeding your plant- Just potting the plant and keeping it at home is not enough. You need to feed your plants at regular intervals with nutritious fertilizer. Few signs of nutrient deficiencies include stunted growth, discolored and malformed leaves, and also weak dying stems. Just follow the instructions carefully so that you do not add too much fertilizer. One personal tip, use water-soluble fertilizers instead of putting the powdered one as water-soluble ones go deep down the root and work their magic where needed the most.
- Wiping the plant- In case your plant seems to be attacked by insects or pests you could do 2-3 things to keep it safe. To begin with wipe your plant clean with a wet cloth, spray mild soap solution, spray neem oil or you could also buy pest control spray available in the market for plants.
- Repotting- An overwatered plant will have drooping leaves and will have a wilted kind of a look to it. You may also see some brown-yellow leaves while the soil around the plant may seem wet. If you feel that your plant is dying due to overwatering then the best solution is to re-pot the plant in dry and fresh soil.
- Repotting to bigger pot- Most of the time we forget that with time the plant grows and so does the roots. In such situations, we need to check the base of the pot for any roots that are protruding out from the holes. If yes then it’s time for you to re-pot the plant in a bigger planter or to cut the roots a little to avoid overgrowth. Some plants have huge roots and need bigger spaces to grow well.
- Pest control- You need to keep an eye on the signs of pests. Pests can create havoc with your healthy and beautiful plant. Folded leaves, curled up leaves, abnormal growth, deformed and brown-colored leaves, at times holes in the leaves, and a white-looking substance deposited on the plant are signs of a big attack. You can use a mild soap solution to get rid of most of the pests. Just put the solution in a spray bottle and the plant should be good again.
Hope you like these tips to revive a DYING plant. I usually use one of these and my plants are happy again. Do keep in mind that these tips are savior but not necessarily save the plants if the damage has reached the roots of the plant. Mushy, rotten roots cannot be recovered and, in such situations, you have to do away with the plant remains and get a new one.
